It's a matter of doing the math on the bearing load and friction differences between a 1° or less downbearing on the bridge top and the two 10° or so bearing and friction loads at the bridge pins. Making an attempt to actually quantify these forces indicates to me that bridge cap friction is comparatively inconsequential. The visual aspect is certainly real for notching, but it needn't be a lubricant. Ron N
