Hi Tim,
             I have changed the bass strings, with a set of custom wound 
strings with excellent results.  If we are not looking at the 
board.  That's the other variable.
Big variations in tone from note to note, with a new set of hammers is 
usually a tip off, that the strings are less than what they should be.
I some times think the string winder puts too much tension on the winding.
