Mark,
Sorry, but the only pics I have handy are the ones in the Journal
articles. For vertical dampers, it's a piece of cake. Lay the threshold
(using the profile in the articles) upside down, lay the action down with
the dampers in the trough of the threshold, and squirt your stuff in and
around until they are saturated. The felt will keep the solution from going
anywhere, and any holes in the threshold can be taped with packing tape. It
seems to be resistant to wall paper remover. Don't use duct or gaffers tape!
For grand damper soaking, use two segments of threshold, with some
small diameter extra vinyl tubing on the edge. Set them up on supports with
a little rigging so that the damper wires can be forced (gently) through
the seam between the segments. Think of an end view looking like a
flattened "W", or more like an upside down version of the line drawing used
for birds in flight. The segments will have to be tilted a bit, so the felt
is in the trough on both segments. Then squirt in your solution.
For hammer flushing, it should be simple, although the only times
I've flushed, I did it outside in the sand. Probably not environmentally
pc, but I've only done it a couple of times, and for just a few hammers.
So, anyway, with a threshold as a trough, you could do 'em right side up or
upside down, on the frame, off the frame, on the stack, or with the rail
removed (non S&S). Should work out fine. There are several ways to form a
dam at the ends of the threshold, if needed. Tape, shoe-goo, vinyl tubing,
whatever.
Enjoy,
Guy
