Fred You asked about wool string braid. I have been using strips of Billiard cloth for the last several years for both understring felt and string braid. It is a wool/polyester blend, about 80 -20 I believe. It is available in a variety of colors which makes it easy to match old style belly cloth. It is much less expensive than bushing cloth and has a very similar appearance. It tends to be thinner than medium bushing cloth but it performs very similarly. I usually tear it into strips. It is available at billiard supply companies. If you can find a shop that has remnants it can be quite reasonably priced. I got about two and a half yards of scarlet a while back for about $10.00 because it was the end of the bolt and it was the last of the color dye match; not enough for an entire pool table. It also performs well on the ends of music desks. I especially like the maroon for stringing pianos from the 20's and 30's.
