The reason college know to ask for 30 years experience for a carpenter, is because that is what other colleges are requiring. Most colleges are requiring only 3 years of experience for piano technicians. That's the going rate. Just like the going rate for a head football coaches is $1M per year. One of these days, "they" will figure it out.

I was chatting with the institute carpenter the other day.  When he was hired, it was partly because he had the required TWENTY years experience.  Compared to that, the mere three years required by MTSU doesn't seem like much to ask for.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY School of Music -- Specialist/Piano Technician  
 (position no. 131470)

 

The MTSU School of Music seeks applications for a Specialist/Piano Technician with a full-time administrative appointment with benefits.  Duties include tuning, regulating and voicing 60 keyboard instruments, managing the keyboard inventory, and possibly developing and teaching a course in keyboard technology.  Three years experience in the field and a bachelors degree in music are minimum requirements; experience in management of keyboard inventory at a college or university is highly desirable.  The deadline for applications is April 15.
