Yes, Stan, you are right. There are differences. But every Steinway I've worked with has a familiarity of tone and touch unless they've had somebody else's parts installed. I can sense a difference in the action when the parts are not OEM, and I can hear it when the hammers and strings are different. Not that it's bad, and not that Steinway hasn't had its own issues with parts over the years. But there is a difference.

And there may be the point. If I can sense the difference, I'm sure the players can as well.

  ... and thus this tortured argument has, once again, come 'full-circle'.  Can someone refresh my memory as to what a Steinway is supposed to sound like?  To date, every Steinway I've ever experienced has sounded ... unique.   Some magnificent,  some satisfactory, some not-so-much.
