The YUS 5 replaces the U5. The U5 has aggraffes and a thick pressure bar for the high treble. The YUS5 removes all these. Also the YUS5 has 4 coils for the high treble strings while the U5 had only 3 coils-can someone explain why? My experience is that the U5 has a mellower tone.

I tuned a Yamaha Upright YUS 5 recently Is this their largest upright/ The
center pedal is a sostenuto, and it has a muffler rail worked by a T-shaped
handle under the keybed near the bass end. It was impeccable, though could do
with voicing down a little. The pins were extremely tight.

Hi Ted,
Yes it's their tallest piano, 52" they usually arrive a bit
too bright for my taste. Never the less an excellent piano. Many of the
Yamaha's are coming in with tighter pins, some thing has changed in the
factory?
Warm Regards
Roger

Hi Delwin,
I?m very glad to hear this from you. I went to the Piano Book, and Larry Fine says this type of construction has advantages when done right. It is moving into better quality pianos. Since ?laminated? used to mean cheap, manufactures (as others have pointed out) have different ways to describe it.
Thanks!

It?s a crowned, laminated soundboard with the face laminae at 15? to the core. Yes, it?s a good thing.

The soundboard on Hailun uprights and smaller grands is described as follows:
"All mountain spruce with 15 degree spruce meniscus coating for climatic resistance and flexibility."
Never heard of it! Is it a good thing? How might it affect the sound? The Hailun's I have played are surprisingly resonant, with good sustain.
Comments encouraged!

Sounds like a similar piano to the Kawai K-8, which has the same sostenuto / muffler arrangement, also has agraffes, etc.
Nice pianos. Not so bright as brand Y, maybe :)
