Thank you, thank you, thank you to the many here who helped educate me about Steinway selection.

Our appointment was yesterday. Steinway was more than hospitable; the selection room techs were helpful and indulged my poking around inside the pianos.

The one surprise of the day was the the general quality of the actions in these pianos. In a word, I think they are great. I mentioned on one of the lists a few weeks ago that I believe Steinway is currently making the finest shanks and flanges I've seen from anywhere. I had lunch yesterday with Steinway's Bob Berger who detailed some of the effort that has gone into re-tooling the action department. It was cool to have noticed in the field the good parts and then go to Steinway and hear about what they went through to improve them so much.

No similar improvement was found in the soundboards.

The tunings, regulation, and voicing of the selection room pianos did actually hinder the selection somewhat. I understand that the selection room pianos cannot possibly be concert-ready, and the techs there actually re-tuned one of the pianos at our request while we were there. Still, the reality was that the pianists did feel some discomfort with making selections of pianos that still needed much prep work.

Thanks to the help I received here I felt prepared to assist with the selection. I am grateful.
