In a message dated 98-08-22 15:51:29 EDT, you write:

<< The little doughnut-shaped grommets at the top of the sticker wires
(1967 Baldin Acrosonic spinet) have gone brittle. Looks like I should
just be able to break them off and stretch the new rubber ones over the
smallish nut at the top of the sticker wire. OK? Or do I need to
unscrew the wires to slip the grommet on the lower end? Thanks in
 advance.

You need to slip the nut off the wire to replace the rubber grommets.

A technical tip here:

The nut fits into a tuning tip. If there are any nuts that are hard to get
off, you can unsrew the head of your tuning lever, and use it to undo the nut.

But it gets better. Schaff makes a tuning tip that fits onto a quarter inch
driver, that fits into a power screwdriver. Any questions?
