Greg:

Steinways sometimes come from the factory with leads removed.  I did a
"D" last Summer that was that way.  Not only that, when I installed the
new hammers, I removed even more - in this case, all from the bass
section.

Using sugar pine or spruce plugs is the only thing better than leaving
the holes IMHO.
