Dear "Jazz"

I'm sorry for the snippiness of some of our replies. As you may have
noticed by now, we all use real names on this list. Your giving us only a
nickname may have been why people treated you with less politeness.

You call yourself an apprentice. Are you apprenticed _to_ someone? It is a
good way to learn, if the person training you does high quality work
themselves. One might argue that the educational efforts of the Guild and
the various training courses are really taking the place of the
old-fashioned one-on-one training which is so hard to get now.

I consider that if you are going to tune other people's pianos _for money_,
rather than just as a favor to them, that you need to reach a good level of
skill not only in tuning but in repairs. An ignorant person in a tight
corner can do a lot of damage in a short period of time.

If there is no one who can teach you within reach, your best bet is to join
the Guild and to take Randy Potter's course. If you are serious enough
about doing good work on pianos, a residential course at a place like the
Bennett Street School is worth the effort.

Sincerely,

Susan Kline

P.S. There are also "gentle ladies" of the Guild .... and a number of them
are on this list.
