Thanks for that Clyde, that certainly follows what I have seen. So some =
strength must be lost from coiling on the pin. Maybe Mason and Hamlin =
were onto something with their stringer system. I have read and heard =
that piano wire is at its best when its at 70% of breaking point, What =
is the allowance for elastic limit and coiling on the pin?

where the coil stops and the "straight" section begins.  Does that help? =
