Hi all, I replaced the damper felt on a 1968 Schimmel grand (about 5'10") yesterday. It had 10 single bass strings. In taking the old felt off I noticed that about 4 bass dampers (about #'s 5-8) had strips of heavy card stock slightly smaller than the side of the damper glued to the sides of the all of those damper wedges. I assume that this was to add ridgidity to the blocks and prevent spred. I was surprised to see it, especially on the smaller single strings and not the lowest/fattest notes. Is this common? Why would they have done it only on these notes? To sort of wrap around and not just sit on the very top? Does anyone do this now...maker or repair shop?? BTW, this was a very clean and nice piano.
