Michael,

Having bought the 80w iron, I've learned to use it with good results.
The higher heat enables me to work more quickly and it's much less apt
to get too cool.

It's too hot to use directly on the hammer felt and for that purpose I
installed an inline rheostat that works very well.

I don't think the type of cloth makes all that much difference as long
as it can take the heat of the iron.
