Hey Paul I see your dilema. One solution to your sticky wicket would be to have baldwin make your lid raw , no finish and send it to esquire finishers in L.A.. I just heard that they do polyester. I'm guessing ther are others who will do it .If your hoping for a cheap fix this won't be it , however possible at least. A new poplar core lid figure 7 or 8 hundred $ plus shipping.
