Hi Tim,
            Sure do on the old clunker verticals.  With the action in the
cradle.  Wrap the hammers in polythene. The hammers facing down. Pass a
steam kettle back and forth a few times. Cheap and nasty kind of fix. Let
them dry over night in the shop. Use a hair drier in the field.
When the felt gets hard, the best long term solution is to replace it.
