Technically, you don't even have to have bushings in plates that call for them, because I don't think it has anything bearing on tuning stability. Recently, I did a floor tuning on a Chickering Grand. There was quite a bit of flex in the pins and I thought that one of the factors (besides lousy tuning pins) might be the lack of bushings. In other words, would plate bushings provide extra stability in the pins themselves rather than provide tuning stability? Anybody?
