  All your points are well taken.  I have not had more than a couple of
unstable yam. blocks in 30 years and have tuned hundreds(I fixed those with
shims.)  I've replaced Yamaha blocks to fix the creaking /popping syndrome
that seems to occur in drier climates and gets worse over time.
    I have to acquiesce to your design parameter logic concerning yams. ,
But I don't agree that every stwy tuning pin is eventually going to lean
against the plate because that's not what I'm seeing. I see some. As a side
note I've been using no.1 pins to mitigate the small size of the plate hole.
It's not much but it helps.
