Rather than drilling the hole larger, remove 1 or 2 strands at a time until 
the cord is
of appropriate diameter. This could only be done to the degree that the 
covering will
reduce by stretching.

There are different diameter cords also.

Has anyone investigated if this cord is available at a hardware store or 
window covering purveyor?
