David Hughes, in Baltimore Maryland, makes new lids for Steinways. David runs a top-notch business. He makes his lids out of MDF cores, puts on hardwood edges and hardwood inserts where hinges go, and veneers both sides.

If you are trying to cut down on costs, I would consider using a high grade hardwood plywood, and simply epoxy in maple pinblock plugs where the hinge screws will go. Get it veneered in birch or some other close-grained hardwood and you won't even have to do much grain filling. You mention that you are going to spray the lid - a solid color? If so, you can rout your edges to the desired shape and paint with thin epoxy until all edge pores are closed up. Sand, and you will have a nice solid edge to paint.

If you are going to finish natural................give David Hughes a call. That will really add to the specialty aspect of the project!
