I am surprised at both of these statements as it runs so contrary to
my own experience

Roger, I do not understand your abbreviation "spec'ed", but your
sentence seems to imply Hamilton was made to use only Darnell type
casters unless someone was trying to save some money.

I also have to infer the Hamiltons that are being discussed are the
Studio size pianos in order to make the following comments:

I have yet to do caster work on any Hamilton Studio piano in 23 years
that ever used Darnell castors, only the university style casters I
referenced in an earlier post. To support this I have at least 40
Hamilton Studios and another 67 Baldwin Studios in my dbase, many of
which I service annually.

And Joe, since you did not qualify what constitutes a cheaper set, I
can't imagine the university style caster being considered a cheap
caster, unless your reference is only in comparing the price of it as
opposed to the Darnell caster.

Darnell casters are definitely a quality caster, and I have had
occassion to install those as well, but not customarily in
situations where they were not originally intended.

Sincerely,
