Hi Gordon,
You sound like you may be reluctant to remove the action<G> There are repair
springs that have a screw that attaches the repair spring, but I have found
them to be more of a problem than a cure. The best is to remove the action
and replace all springs as others will most likely break.
The tool to use is an old coat hanger!
Just cut off the part that holds your pants leaving a handle at the bend,
and use that to keep the eye of the spring open as you pull the foot end
through the hole in the wood. Try to keep the same tightness to each spring
as you go. Do 6 to 10 springs at a time on the coat hanger.
I know the above is the easy part but removing the action is also a snap,
oops bad choice of words.
The secret that I have learned is that you need to remove all case parts
that MIGHT interfere with the actions removal, including the keys.
Next take a look at the back rail cloth. If the stickers will hang up on
this becuase it hangs over too far, make sure that the edge towards the
stickers is loose like it should be so that the stickers will lift the felt
and not become stuck on it as you lift the action.
Not you are ready to remove the action without any further aids provided the
action brackets are not still screwed down!
Just lift the action by the brackets and back rail. This will raise all of
the hammers giving you more clearance to work with.
As the stickers come up keep a little gentle pressure against the key bed so
that they can rise toward you. When the action is about 2/3rds out roll the
action towards yourself.
The stickers will fall between the balance rail pins but as you continue to
gently lift and rotate the action towards you they will free themselves.
continue to lift the action out letting the stickers hang as they will, oops
did you remember to clear off a table or counter top? If not continue to
roll the action until the stickers are on top and lay the action on the
floor.
