Wim >> Wim I agree with what Ron says.....it does matter and 'thinner' on the balance rail adds stability to regulation....the front rail is a different matter as changing varying thicknesses of punchings change the way the keys stroke 'feels' if not the actual regulation per se (remember this is an area of touch that is as much perception of the player as well as it is reality).............. A thicker punching gives a 'mushier' feel at the bottom of the keystoke than does a thinner one and I think it depends on the use that a piano will receive which should guide us as to what thickness is best suited, i.e. for a beginner perhaps a softer feel would be more desirable than a harder feel as would be appropriate say to a Horowitz............
