Aluminium is structurally fine to use for the plate, provided that 
its strut section sizes are increased slightly to allow for the lower 
yield point of Aluminium compared to cast iron.

However, the big problem with using it has to do with tuning 
stability. Aluminium has a much higher thermal expansion rate than 
does SAE 1085 piano wire (by a factor of around 3 from memory). So 
the tuning stability will be, all other factors being equal, inferior.
