Strange back duplex arrangement

Hello!

I have attached a picture of an 1878 Schweighofer grand which has a really 
strange duplex arrangement: the duplex string lengths decrease!!! while the 
speaking lengths increase. Anyway I have attached a picture if my 
explanation isn't clear.
Anybody has seen this before or knows why it's built this way?
