I thought Ecsaine was the stuff Baldwin used on upright hammer butts
and catchers for a while, instead of leather, and that over the years it
hardened too much and started clicking, so then it had to be replaced,
for which job Baldwin offered special kits which included glue and some
new material. Or was the new material the Ecsaine?

Woops.......replying to my own post, I forgot that the original
material used by Baldwin on butts and catchers was Corfam (also used for
shoe soles at the time) and that the replacement material they furnished
was (is still?) Ecsaine. --D.N.
