  Joe,

  Some scanners have a "preview" option.  It scans very quickly first, =
at a very low resolution.  Then, you may have the option to crop the =
area you're scanning, so that the final, high-resolution scan only =
covers part of the area.

  You can also open your image in the simple utility Paint (under Start =
| All Programs | Accessories).  Use the crop tool to select the area you =
want.  Copy that area (Ctrl-C), then open a new file in Paint and paste =
(Ctrl-V).  Save this new file as type JPEG (the default BMP makes very =
big files).

  Here's another "scan". This time, the one on the right is the original =
configuration, which works, but has a tendency to "pop" out a lot. The =
one on the left is the "new/improved" model, which I just made.<G>
