Joel,

The earlier KGs were higher in tension than the current RXs, but I 
don't think quite as high as your observations indicate.  As David 
mentioned, Kawai uses metric wire gauges when marking the bridges, 
and US wire gauges are smaller.  The breaking percents shouldn't 
change much, but the tension will.
