Ric B.:
This seems to be a sensitive point, though I'm not sure why. The issue of
Steinway came up because we were talking about...well, Steinways. I don't
view it as the issue of soundboard manufacture being in dispute. For the
purposes of this discussion, I'm just reporting what I find, the data as it
were. My findings are a little different than David A's, that's all. If
the CC method has the capacity to be a consistent one (which is in dispute)
then it speaks even more to the issue that many techs are reporting
suggesting that the controls necessary for S&S to produce consistent results
are not in place. Ron O's report of more generalized findings might shed
a broader light on the entire subject. As Ron N mentioned, the list is
replete with discussions on this topic.
With respect to prep/dealership/manufacture problems, it is germane in that
no matter what Herculean efforts the dealer is willing and/or able to
undertake, they are limited by both responsibility and practicality in what
they can overcome when it comes to manufacturing problems.

Subject: Steinways / David Andersen
Again...
I would like to keep our P's and Q's seperated here. This has nothing
to do with the prep/dealership/manufacture problem per se... which seems
to be the primary gripe by most involved in the discussion, and
certainly is something we could actually do something about. I will
drop this tangent of the main thrust of the thread by simply repeating
that I find it very odd that when ever this kind of comment comes up it
has always to do with Steinways... when in reality there are several
other manufacturers who go at least as far down the road of compression
soundboards then Steinway does. Why do we never hear about these
failures in Yamahas, Schimmels, Bechsteins, Steingræbers ... etc etc.
But this is another subject matter entirely.
Cheers
RicB
BTW, I don't agree with David Andersen on the soundboard/front end
ratio, at
least not exactly. While outright failures are not that common,
unevenness
in outcomes is, especially through the treble sections. I think that
inconsistency is inherent in the process and we too easily learn to
accept
less than is possible.
