Just tell them that there are 1200 Cents in an octave... and the 
distance from each note to the next is exactly 100 cents.  You might 
have to explain that there is a logrithmic relationship between cents in 
Hz, but because thats complicated for the average Joe on the street its 
not necessary to get into any in depth explaination. By way of contrast 
you could point out that if one tuned Pythagoren one would end up with 
the 24 cent problem at the end of the circle of 5ths. ET is a way of 
evenly distributing that <<left-over>>
