Of course. That goes without saying. If one has decided to retain the original cap, downbearing needs should have been addressed prior to that decision being made.

And regarding planing down to base of string grooves, that will not change the downbearing.

  Would you not recommend that some bearing measurements be taken to see whether there is a bearing range available for planing? Otherwise, he might find himself with a nice looking but underborn bridge. Thoughts?
