  It is almost always preferable, I think, to apply the same kind of material that was used for the gold coats, or at least stuff from the same manufacturer that states the two finishes work together.  Compatibility can always rear its ugly head, sometimes even down the road a bit, just when you thought everything had worked out beautifully (DAMHIK).  I don't use cans, so I'm not sure what lines are available that would include a gold color you like and a clear coat of the same stuff.  I always suspend bronze powder in the same lacquer I am using for the clear top coat (powder in gloss, top coat semi), and have never had any compatibility issues or mottling of the gold color.  
   
  I would certainly think that SOME manufacturer would have compatible can finishes in gold and clear - maybe Mohawk?
