Hey Barbara, My experience has been that the pianos are so badly out of regulation, that they couldn't play soft with a Q-tip, let alone those cardboard hammers. I'm getting much better at convincing folks on the need for regulation, but... to be honest, I haven't focused on voicing much. Probably because a) I'm a whole lot less confident about my voicing technique (having done very little) and b) I'm a lot more confident about regulation (besides which, they can SEE and feel the parts move, which helps convince them). And regulation jobs are increasing, so I obviously should add voicing to my list of services. Which means getting more training or finding some pianos to experiment on. Here's the problem: I don't know how to hear voicing issues. I have no way of knowing whether what I hear is what is meant by the words used in books to describe various problems. (Try describing a complex smell without comparing it to anything else... and that's pretty much where I am, aurally.) And that's why I'm not going to feel confident until I get some training with a live technician. In the meantime, however, I'm certainly willing to experiment, so I'd be thankful for any suggestions. Thanks!
