strip muting with sheet metal

Marshall,

It doesn't have to be sheet metal. It also could be cardboard or plastic
sheet. It could be made with an empty liquid soap or bleach container.
The idea is to have something rigid enough to fold the dampers while the
mute felt is pushed down.

Is there a subsitute for sheet metal? I don't have a shop. I wonder if
they still make these metal rulers that were kinda fat and flimsy, and
is so would that work?
