Story and Clark Grand (Water Damage)

Matthew,
You might consider a "quickie" utilitarian rebuild, I've done this. When the piano is not that old and the value isn't there and the strings need replacing from something like you describe. With a helper I restring the piano on site in a day or two with new strings and dampers, I know you need hammers, too. Anyway, no plate pulling, no moving, many corners cut. It's more of a repair than a restoration to be sure, but sometimes it's what's right for the situation. You can still clean up the capo, clean the board and plate, with a helper you can get a lot done fast. Be sure to check the back action, if it got wet, it might be curtains.

  Matthew,

It’s a Yamaha grand with the Story and Clark name on the front. Best piano Story and Clark ever “made” ! <G>

Same era as the Kawai made Howard for Baldwin. Now it’s Asian made Boston’s and Essex for Steinway and every name you can remember made in China.

Anyway, I’d be careful about any definitive assessment on water damage as the final result may take a while to show up.

Without seeing the piano I think the school would be best served by declaring this piano a total loss.

The next step is to assign value and I will leave that discussion for another thread.

  Okay guys,

I returned from my inspection at the school with the water damaged piano.

The piano is a 1969 Story and Clark Grand. It is sad, but it could be worse. The soundboard and pinblock looked fine beside the anticipated water stain on the board.

It will need a complete restringing. All the tuning pins are rusted. All hammers will need replacing as well as all felts and dampers, obviously.

This is a Story and Clark Grand with a Yamaha action. Can someone explain the history and connection here?

Since this is at a public school, I am sure they will agree to the partial rebuild at the drop of a hat (yeah, right!). Have any of you had any luck with a school agreeing to this kind of work? If they don't, I wonder if I can buy it from them and do it myself? Good experience, huh?

  Matthew
