[pianotech] Calculating harmonics/ovrtones - Valotti scale

Julia-

Valotti is easy to tune by ear.
All of the Natural to Natural fourths and fifths (B-E-A-D-G-C-F) are tempered twice as much as in equal temperament. All of the fourths and fifths that have one or two accidentals are tuned pure. (F-A#-D#-G#-C#-F#-B)

To tune Valotti by ear, divide the octave into 3 equal tempered thirds A-C#-F-A. Tune all pure fifths and fourths from C#:
C#-F#-B and C#-G#-D#-A#-F (retuning F). Tune E between B and A. Tune D-G-C to fit between A and F. All fourths should sound about the same in the mid-range, all fifths should sound about the same. They will beat about twice as fast as in equal temperament. When you play chords around the circle of fifths, you will hear the color change from mellow to bright and back to mellow again. Play chords F-G-C and F#-G#-C# to hear a clear contrast of tempering.

  Greetings Jason,

How do I calculate what the 4ths beat at. Using the frequencies you stated (also, thanks for those) do I chart the opvertone frequencies and then look for them that way, or is that the "long" way in other words would there be a faster way? Not that I am opposed to doing the math (love it) but was just wondering. Are there software programs for this or is it better to just set up an Excell sheet? Suggestions?

Also, thanks Ed Foote for the info.

  Thank you for your help

If you are tuning a Valotti temperament, some of them 4ths are gonna
be shouting and some of them are going to be mute. A and Eb M3's will be
pretty close to ET, but the rest of the buddies are going to be aliens...
