If the gold paint is completely opaque, it won't matter.  If it isn't, the red paint under it will enhance the look.  Red paint is recommended under a gold leafing project.  I don't do plate reguilding, but I'm sure that some manufacturers use red primer under the gold.  I believe green can also be used under gold.

My imagination or does anyone else notice that on the plate gold looks a bit better over a red primer than a grey one?
