[pianotech] String scaling was BB Mason and Tenor Cross over

I guess the question is whether the double wrap was responsible for the
sound you like. I would doubt it. Arledge usually reduces the core
dimension on that piano as well to about .055 (I think-they're not making my
strings or doing my scaling so I'm not sure). I'm not really convinced that
the double wrap or single wrap makes any difference in the tone. It's the
relationship of core to outer wrap that makes the difference. In fact, I
believe that the Arledge program has a built in for determining if the
strings are double or single wrapped and it has, again, to do with the core
to outer dimension relationship. I can recall having them do a set for me
some time ago and my specs translated by their program called for double
wraps on 1-9 but by the time they got to string #10 the specs on the wrap
dimension had come down enough to fall into the single wrap category so
that's what came: 9 double wraps and then one single wrap monochord. There
was no discernable difference in tone between string #9 and string #10. I
believe the problem is that if the outer wrap copper is too thick for the
inner core it will tend to come loose more easily thus the decision in such
cases to use an inner wrap. Correct me if that's wrong anyone.

Actually the first double wrapped Mono-chords I experienced on a 9 ft. Stwy
was for me a happy accident. I simply gave Chip at Areledge a memo saying
unless further notified send all Bass mon-chords double wrapped. I actually
didn't mean for him to do the 9 ft this way but when I got back to the
shop.... they were on and it turned out I like it. It was David Andersens
Stwy D ....ask him his opinion.

I specify "monochords double wrap where possible", and haven't seen a double
wrap come back for a 9' piano yet.
