[pianotech] WNG Backchecks

Hi Gene:

To avoid the kind of issues that you are having, it has been my practice to
measure the string height and hammer center pin height and calculate the
boring distance. I also record the hammer tail lengths at the ends of each
section (they will vary in length in some pianos). Most of the time I will
use the lengths that came with the original hammers. Then I order a set of
hammers where the overall hammer length is at least several mm greater than
anything I would likely need. After I have bored the set, if the tail
lengths vary, I mark the tail length from the center of the bore at the ends
of each section, and then strike a line across the massed hammers. I have a
little jig I use on my bandsaw to then cut the tails to length.

Having custom bored the hammers to the piano and established the preferred
tail length, I hang the hammers. I regulate the let off for sample hammers
at each section end. At let off, I measure the distance from the bottom of
the tail to the top of the key to establish what the back check height
needs to be. I will then press the new back checks into the hole to the
desired height.

If I am not mistaken, I believe the WNG back checks come in two wire
lengths. If you order hammers that are long enough, you should not have the
issues you encountered here.

Subject: [pianotech] WNG Backchecks

Hello list,

While trying to get ready for installation of my first WNG Backcheck set I
discover that my hammer set (purchased uncut, unbored & uncoved) is not long
enough (especially in the upper bass) to get the 25.4mm beyond bore
distance.

Anyone else get a chance to work with these yet? Have similar issues?

Gene
