Is alcohol useful for softening all kinds of glue, or just hide glue?

  I also use a jack when using Alcohol (though I won't mix with water any more, thanks JD).  However, rather than a bottle jack, I use one of the mini pinblock support jacks with a block under the end of the pinblock.  Just make sure to let the Alcohol do most of the work and not get too carried away with cranking (pumping) up the jack.  I can't imagine it would ever happen, but I'd hate to have the wrong joint fail.  I tend to err on the side of caution.

    Thanks to all who have replied.

    Since I have used the circular saw and the reciprocating saw, I think I would like to try something new. The alcohol method described by John D and William M seems to be what I am looking for. (John, I like the jack idea). The block comes out clean, I'll have a good template and no new tools to buy. If I have a problem, I can always use my recip saw. Has worked for years. Just looking for an easier way to try.
