To echo both Paul & Jim's comments and add 2c. OPERATIVE words are spot on!
My wife, 25 yrs in the medical field, cancer survivor, etc. always explains that pain is there for a purpose.
Yes, too much pain may have to be addressed, but that typically amounts to less than 10% of the time.
Use only as little as you need. Like in many things piano related... less is more.

It's
certainly wise advice to be wary of pain killers, but it's also helpful
to realize that you won't become addicted to them if you take them when
you NEED them. I have heard that from a variety of reliable sources
over the years, and it was very recently (this month) echoed by a very
knowledgeable close friend/nurse. Operative word is NEED, not "want" or
"crave"!!

Rob,

Ditto what Phil said – lay low! Follow doctors advice. Also,
from a person who’s had many surgeries, be wary of the pain killers. I
use them as little as possible, trying not to become dependent. I speak
from experience. I won’t even take an aspirin w/o questioning whether I
really need it. I’ve found that with the exception of the immediate days
after surgery, and some nights when I absolutely couldn’t bare the pain
(It’s hard to sleep anyway) I found it better to deal with the pain than
the effects of some of the drugs. My opinion only!

Good luck!
