[pianotech] Kawai UST7 sluggish action

 Dale, Trix,

I've seen this before in several UST7s, particularly the ones with wood actions.... On the ones I've fixed, it was the hammer flange centers. 1,500,000 has to be at least 20 year old, probably more, so the warranty is history.

There are generally not many issues with these pianos, and they are really good institutional instruments in terms of durability, tone, and response (except for the occasional one with flange tightness...) I wish they still made this model.

(by the way this is Trix writing for Dale who is out in the field)

Sorry I should have mentioned the sluggishness is in the hammer flange centerpin bushing. There are three of these pianos at this facility and judging by the age, they arrived here together as soon as the building was built and open....

Obviously not under warranty anymore....

trix for Dale

Has anyone run into a situation where a Kawai USt7 has a sluggish action...if so were you able to come up with a successful remedy, and/or did you find it was covered by waranty? The one I am tuning doesn't look that old (s/n 1,470,000).....

Thanks,
Dale

Dale,

I don't often find problems with sluggishness in Kawai pianos. But, when it appears, it's generally in the keys. Usually at the balance hole, but occasionally a tight key bushing.

One other thing to check is the jack stop rail. If it's too close, it can cause intermittent sluggishness that can be difficult to diagnose.

Other than that, I guess everything else is gonna be "the basics."
