My dad was a tuner, so I learned a little about piano work when I was in High School. 10 years later, after I was laid off from teaching, I spent a month with him learning how to tune, do minor repairs and regulations, and hung up my shingle. I then joined the local PTG chapter, which met once a moth. Nine months later I went to my first seminar, and shortly after that, attended my first PTG convention. I learned so much that at that convention, that I was mentally exhausted at the end. I made it a point to attend every chapter meeting, make it to at least one weekend seminar a year, and go to every convention. That was 33 years ago. Since then I have attended and/or taught at over 60 seminars, and missed only one PTG convention.

You don't say how and what course you're following, but Randy Potter has a very good one that will teach you all the basics. If you have the opportunity, work for a local dealer which sells used pianos. But most importantly, attend those chapter meetings, and get to know other tuners on the island, If they are anything like the members of other chapters, most of them will be more than happy to answer any questions you have, and maybe even allow you to follow them around once in a while.

As a current student of Piano Technology, trying to carve out my path of learning on Vancouver Island BC…. I wonder where different people have gained their knowledge. If you would like to share your experience I would be thrilled… because there is so much knowledge and talent on this forum!!

Thanks
Zoe
