[pianotech] animals interrupting tunings

My most memorable one was in nice, warm, upper middle class type home where there were numerous instruments around, obviously used and played but displayed nicely, too. The gentleman was at home and took me to the piano, introduced me to the dog, a Lab / Great Dane mix, and I went to work.

Every so often, maybe every 15 minutes or so, the dog would come by and lay his head in my lap for a little attention. And he was such a sweet dog, I couldn't help but pet him and talk softly to him. (Actually, it was one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met. He was large, but sweet and gentle, with a laid back temperament.)

After about the third visit from the dog, the owner popped his head around the corner and said, "If you keep that up for another 10 minutes, he's gonna tell you where the family silver is."

I don't remember much about the piano, but it's a fond memory I'll carry with me for a long time.

... this from someone who's had both a St. Bernard and a Newfoundland and several Collies.

:-)

What kinds of stories do some of you have about animals interrupting tunings? I
have one customer with a dog which tried to sing the note I was tuning.
Sometimes I ask customers to remove the bird cage from the room as the birds
really get going as I do the top octaves.
