[pianotech] MyPTG

I have been very curious about the figures on reduced volume on
Pianotech, both listserv and MyPTG, so I investigated a little. I
subscribed (momentarily) to both pianotech and caut to be able to see
the subscriber lists. They are both quite large. Pianotech still has
900-ish, caut 400-ish. Both lists are functioning, technically,
precisely the same as they had been previously, to the best of my
knowledge.

So why the reduction in volume? Dale has suggested that a lot of it is
due to the fact that most of the discussion has centered on MyPTG
issues, and not on piano related topics. There is probably some truth
to that. Another factor may be that a number of people, like myself,
have left the listserv environment, and some of these people are "key"
people to keeping the conversation going (I know that I contributed
far more than my share to the caut conversation).

In any case, the idea that higher logic software is "killing the
lists" is simply illogical. The lists continue as they were, for the
time being. If "everybody" is rejecting MyPTG and loving the
listservs, that would mean that the listserv volume would remain
healthy (somewhat diminished, but certainly not to the extent
documented).

The reality must be more complex. A lot of attention and time is being
devoted, one way or another, to coming to terms with the MyPTG suite,
either people interacting with it and learning it, or people
criticizing it and looking at alternatives. That will obviously sap
interest and involvement in an on-going list.

One thing that my short foray back into the world of listserv made
plain to me: the listserv does not serve my needs. I will say that
very loud and clear: listserv, or pure email, generalized conversation
group does not meet my needs. I will have nothing to do with it any
more. I want something different. Forum in the design of Pianoworld
also does not meet my needs. I will have nothing to do with it.

MyPTG and Higher Logic, for all the faults pointed out by many (some
of which are quite valid complaints, others simply pettiness and lack
of willingness to learn and adapt), does serve my needs. I would
prefer something without the real faults, but I vastly prefer this to
either listserv (or its clone) or forum a la Pianoworld.
