[pianotech] Chickering Grand Hammer Flanges?

I just forwarded this to John Rhodes. He probably knows. (At least I hope so.<G>) I'm suspecting that raising the temp. to the proper annealing range for brass would weaken the screws made of steel. And, for that matter some drop screws are made of brass and need to be hard. Is a puzzlement.

Joe,

If you decide to go ahead with the annealing, I would strongly recommend removing the screws first. Steel and brass react very differently to heat treating. Whatever works for brass will do something different, and probably unwanted, to the steel screws. Sorry I don't have enough knowledge/experience to predict exactly what.. hence my caution.

Tom,
I guess that was part of my question, as well.<G> I'd like to retain the flanges, if possible, but there are issues. Still waiting for some of those eye opening answers.<G>

Joe,
I don't know the answer, but I do have a related question about frozen drop screws on these flanges. I've had numerous experiences where they just break off .
So my somewhat related query is will heat break them loose ?
Awaiting our crews response to both questions,
 Best,

Anyone have an idea the difference of expansion rates of Steel and Brass.
I'm into a Chickering Grand and am planning on trying to anneal them
puppies. Reason for asking is wether to remove the screws and drop screws
or leave them in during the annealing process. Any one have some thoughts?

Joe
