[pianotech] Steinway two layer guide rail bushings

I use the thick English bushing cloth (1.8mm) that I get from Pianotek in
bulk. I size the holes with the appropriate bridge pin and alcohol after
sanding and the coating the guide rail with shellac (I use rattle can
shellac). No glue necessary and trying to do two layers of cloth isn't
either. I keep the 1.8 mm cloth in stock and cut to the appropriate width.
If the guide rail holes are too small then drill the old bushings out with
the drill bit that gives you the correct diameter. Removing them that way
is a lot faster and easier as well.

Subject: [pianotech] Steinway two layer guide rail bushings

Dear List:

What is the consensus on re-bushing Steinway two layer guide rail bushings?
Could one thick cloth be used? Are two layers really better in some way
than one? If so, why does only S&S do this? Glue / no glue? (Or shellac
the rails and size the bushings with water/alcohol as I have read here
before?)

A colleague has these bushings to do, he says the holes are 3/16" or about
4.8 mm. With damper wires in the range of 1.8 mm, is there even room for 2
layers?

Thanks for any enlightenment.... or simply light you can shed o this.
