In a situation like this, it might be worth while looking into the
feasibility, of having one turned down from brass, even just a brass cap and
paint the underside black.

Or could it be replated with something other than chrome, like say bronze. 

There must be other choices for plating, more in line with your desire.

Now please let me know.   This is a 1861 Steinway square I am rebuilding and
everything of hardware is brass.  The plate is bronze tone With the original
art work.   Now the question:  do you think a shiny chrome acorn nut would
look good on there?

 

Some how, I just think it should be brass like the hinges and such.  I
wouldn't put nickel tuning pins on it.  If you have a suggestion, I would be
glad to hear it.
