[pianotech] Knabe Screw

No, I'm not modernizing mine. I intend to rebuild the "pear-shaped" butts, and etc.. But my 52" has the dowel caps, whereas my 56"(?) has the stickers with the split bottoms on the pins on rocker caps. These (pre-American Piano Company-late 1800's Knabes) are the most finely crafted uprights I've ever seen. The concert pianist Hugh Hodgson, for whom UGA's world-class Performing Arts Center was named, had 17 pianos in his mansion asccording to his descendants. (Big Steinway grands and everything, I'm quite sure.) But, according to them, the only one he ever really played on was a Knabe just like this!

Thump;
I also have a 52" Knabe upright , I  call it a double stack, the stickers
are attached to the keys with a snap-on fit, I may have put the horse in
front of the cart by already re=stringing it. ?Sounds bueatiful, but I wish
I could modernize the action. Is this what you are doing?

This is the 52" model--nothing pinned to the keys.  So far I haven't
replaced anything--I'm still evaluating, and I'm not planning to replace
what doesn't need it.  This is not intended to be a complete rebuild.  The
butts obviously need new leather, but otherwise they look fine.  I'm still
figuring out how I will proceed with some aspects of the project.  The
double hammer/damper flanges do not make things easier.  If I need parts, I
will likely be in trouble, unless I can get my neighbor to make them (he
could).  I do like the soft pedal assembly design.  And, I might add, the
piano is very heavy for its size.

Joe make one) if it's offered. But the big question for me is the
dowel-capstans under the wips. Did you replace the pinned-to-the-keys
arrangement thusly, or is this the 52" model with dowel caps original? Where
did you get parts that fit?? Did you re-use the original "pear" shaped
butts???
