turning front rail pins....always a no-no?

Dave,
Here's the another application for steaming. Lightly steaming the front 
bushings will temporally close the gap, enough to buy sometime before replacing the 
bushings becomes a reality. Be careful not to overdue the steaming as the 
gluing could be harmed.  Years ago I use to use a bushing tightener which crunch 
the sides of the mortise, causing them to close up. The long term effects, 
however, harmed the mortise more than helping the bushing. Quickly learned that 
tool did more harm them good.
My personal opinion on turning the pins....DON'T!!
Well you're at it, check the balancier holes. If loose, give them a shot of 
steam as well.
